Post 500: Black Cat Appreciation Day

Black Cat Appreciation Day is a “holiday” with a purpose: A black cat is five times less likely to be adopted than any other cat, which means they are euthanized more often than not for lack of people wanting to adopt them. This day is one way humane societies and pounds can change attitudes about black cats, possibly improve the chances a black cat will be adopted instead of put to death for lack of someone to take it home .

Black cats are wonderful creatures. They are elegant, sleek, beautiful, full of cattitude, suitable for the home. They are playful. They amuse. They are like all other cats, just black. I have two myself, and I hope by sharing my life stories with Andy and Dougy I have helped remove some of the bias against black cats from some people’s minds.

I’m not alone in my enthusiasm for black cats. Panther is one such special cat, and Doug and Sharon Brown’s tribute to this beloved pet follows in this video they recently posted:

If you are looking for a pound kitty, do take a look at those that are black. You won’t have bad luck. Nothing “magical” or “diabolical” will happen to you. They are just kittycats, bundles of energy and personality that will capture your heart…if you open it up to them. Andy and Dougy, this is your day!

    • Wow! I always am amazed when I read about cats that live into their third decade! Whatever happens with Andy and Dougy, my hope is they die close to each other because they’ve been together since the womb, literally. Of course, I hope they are long-lived, and I do what I can to promote their health, comfort, and happiness. (I know what you mean about ownership. When I came to my computer moments ago, Dougy was taking a bath on my computer chair. I stared at him, he gave me a “What do you want?” glare, then continued his bath. LOL! Eventually, he got the hint, I got to sit down, and order briefly returns to the household!)

  1. So true and Alis day too. We adopted her from a litter of kitten advertised in the news paper after our old cat Fuzzy died of feline cancer.
Fuzzy was a greay tuxedo kitty.
Ali choose us and hubby fell in love with her immediately.
She is the joy of our heart and our lives.

    • They do that, don’t they? Andy and Dougy were offered to me, but they both walked right over to me and won my heart from the start!

I hope Ali had a better day yesterday, and is continuing to heal. I know you understand this, but it’s hard to deal with a sick kitty (or guinea pig or dog or…), knowing that they can’t tell you exactly how they feel so treatment best matches their needs. Ali’s been on my mind since she fell ill, especially knowing she’s Tim’s little buddy, and he does better when she is around.

    • Donna’s so beautiful, I presume you are speaking of other dogs! I had a black dog (“Peanuts”) when I was a kid, and my grandmother did, too (“Laddie”). I personally like all shades from white to black of any animal.
