Post 620: night stalker…

Cats are crepuscular creatures that spend most of their lives sleeping. That means, to see your pet cat at his or her best, you have to keep cat hours. Ugh!

Andy and Dougy convinced me I had to get up at 2:30 AM today. “Feed us and you can go back to bed!” the little terrorists told me in so many paw swipes and tail taps. But I knew they didn’t really mean I could go back to bed…but do get up and feed us anyway!

Fed, both washed up and went on their ways.

Andy watching out for Dougy… because Dougy was sometimes naughty and mean to him yesterday.

I discovered the purpose of the “pet” setting on my camera yesterday. It doesn’t click or flash the little darlings, and it does take quirky time lapses in the dark while you try to figure out if the thing’s done or not. It’s kind of fun! Even in terrible light — and the two photos today were taken in blackness with just a little light from my computer desk gooseneck lamp — something happens. (Yeah, the cat moves…!)

I have no problem with soft focus or multiple overlapped images. They are oddly interesting and provocative. Kinetic. Creepy.

Andy watching for me… because it’s not too early to give him his medicine!

Andy watched out the back window. Hunh? Owls? Thieves? Those things we never see that cats sometimes stop and look at, creeping us out? (“Oh sxxx! The cats see the ghost of Lane 2 again!”) After determining Dougy wasn’t around and that I was, he hopped off the computer desk and ran to his safe place.

Then Dougy stopped by to whine because no one was there to play with. “I’ll pick you up and give you loving if you continue to whine, Dougy.”

Whoosh! Off he ran. That was all it took. He’s a boy cat and he doesn’t like that lovey-dovey stuff!

  1. Ali is female and is not a snuggler with anyone but TD and then on her terms.
She puts him to bed and lays by him and purrs and snuggles him to sleep, and then goes back through out the night and sticks her nose up to his to make sure he is breathing.

  2. Ah yes, the ” get up, you lazy thing…we’re hungry cause you never feed us”. call of the wild. These two don’t do that anymore….Kali just stares about an inch from one’s nose and Shoko busies herself with some noisy exploit….last night she was in the wrapping paper having a fight with herself. These will wake me up and put down crumbles for them.

    • LOL! Doguy will do the ttail brushing on face, walking up and down my body, kneading on the most exposed spot of my skin with full claws business if I don’t snap to when they want to be fed. His predecessor, Louie, was almost 24 pounds, so when he walked on me, it wasn’t that pleasant. Dougy doesn’t realize that he, at less than half Louie’s weight, actually feels good when he walks on me. Ha!

    • Dougy likes petting and brushing, but he just doesn’t want to be held very long. The older he gets, the longer he lets me hold him (10-20 seconds!) before he tries to get down again.

It is odd that he likes all of the attention, but only wants you to do it to him while he has four paws on the ground or is stretched out on his favorite ottoman. He’s the one that climbs up on my computer desk and plops down where I rest my mouse arm, and there definitely is lots of physical connection between the two of us then because there isn’t that much room there now that he’s a full-grown kitty.

Andy lets me hold him pretty much as long as I want, but it’s like pulling teeth to get him to let me get near enough to him to pick him up! He stands to rests just slightly beyond my reach, typically, so he can make a break before I pick him up if I get a notion.

All that said, both boys are very sweet dispositioned kitties, just quirky about holding.

        • That’s one of my favorite things to do, too: round up both cats to take them to the groomer or the veterinarian. I have to be very stealthy, especially about catching the first one because the second one learns quickly what the plan is, and becomes an escape and evasion artist!
