Post 668: Andy’s new den…

I should know better. Really, I should. The rule of the house is this: “Do not let the cat brothers see any new boxes that come into the house. Ever!”

Smarty me, I opened a box, thinking it had no promise for a cat playhouse (i.e. “den”!), gathered packaging material into a plastic bag and stuffed it all back in the box, a flat affair I intended to toss as soon as the movie on TMC was over. Yeah!

Then Andy came around, patted me on the arm the way he does when he wants something, and I rubbed his ears and face. That seemed to satisfy him  because  he rolled over on his back next to my glide rocker. Usually he runs into the next room, expecting me to follow him.

"Say what?!" Andy sees the potential!

“Say what?!” Andy sees the potential!

I returned to my movie. Shortly after, I heard some noise coming out of the flat box. A fluffy tail stuck out the front. Andy managed to stuff himself in the box, and was “personalizing” it by pushing the plastic bag of packaging material out. He was going to have the whole box to himself!

Andy pops out the "front door" of his new den and...

...looks around for his brother Dougy.

All clear! No Dougy in sight!

All clear! No Dougy in sight! Andy relaxes and prepares for a cat nap!

The house is littered with boxes claimed by the kitties. Eventually, after I see the boys aren’t using a box much, I “recycle” it into the trash, something that always brings both cats to watch.  It’s cute the way they stare in disbelief  while I tear up a box and stuff it in a trash bag! It’s like Romans trying to absorb the invasion of Rome by a barbarian horde. 😉

Andy did let me toss the bag of packaging material. Whoopee! But I bet he or Dougy “excavates” it from the wastepaper basket later because they are naughty kitties that tip trash over. They look like a barbarian horde invading Rome when they do that. Where do they learn this stuff? 🙁

  1. My cats love to get in boxes, of course. They seem to especially love the ones that are way too small for them. They still manage to stake their claim, even when they are spilling out of them. If there is something in the box like tissue paper, game on. – Gabriella

        • We get occasional visitors, but most cats around here are indoor cats. One the boys find especially frightening is Taco the tuxedo cat, an elderly, tough outdoor cat that pretty much rules the outside around here. I’ve attached a video I made of the boys reaction to Taco when he visited one summer…:

          • Both cats have really taken to this stupid flat box. I’ll never get to toss it! They like to chase toys when I toss them into it equally as much as they like to hide in it and ambush toys (or each other!) when it or the other moves by the opening. It’s a great hiding spot, I admit, and black cats especially hide well in it.

          • The things we will do for our animals. We love them and will do anything to make them happy. Of course, I am typing this from an uncomfortable chair because my cat has taken over my good chair for a leisurely nap.

Take a look at the computer chair Dougy’s on. He shreds it every chance he can, and has since the first day i got it. It is a very expensive and very cat-battled chair! (I will probably have it reupholstered in fabric if it gets to the point it is too shredded.) I mean, Dougy is a wonderful little cat, but he is the most destructive little monster on the face of earth when it comes to furniture! I’ve tried different things to try to stop the behavior, but even stopping it this very instance won’t make the chair any better. Yes, my very expensive computer chair is Dougy’s territory! He gets upset if I scoot him off the seat so I can sit on it!

    • LOL! Yes, I set a magazine on the floor by my reading chair, and one or the other cat’s on it in a second! I accidentally drop a piece of paper on the floor by my computer, and , yes, a cat’s on it in an instant. I left a shopping tote on the floor. Seconds later, Andy claimed it, and was exploring the inside. Boxes? Well, the flat one, I’d hoped, Andy was done with, but this morning I heard some scratching behind my computer chair (where that miserable box is…!), and Andy was half in-half out, modifying it on the inside somehow: I think this is his new favorite hidey hole! You know those rubber “gizmos” — a flat, thin piece of rubber — used to open lids? I dropped one of those on the floor the other day, and, yep! A cat’s ass plopped on it faster than you can say “Hello Kitty”!

  2. Oh why do you accuse Andy and Dougy of something they never did!! 😮 Of course us, kittys have to climb and do things in order to be healthy. Tossing garbage is not in our things to do. 😛 😎

    • Climb they do, but they also very deliberately knock over the trash, right in front of me! It isn’t climbing that interests them then, but the interesting scents they know they’ll find once they’ve liberated the contents.

    • You must have the one cat in history that doesn’t like a box! They do have their personalities, eh!? Of my two, Dougy is a kitten when you bring out a toy, but Andy has to warm up to the idea of play first. It always seems a miracle when he finally starts playing! Then, instead of catching and releasing the toy, he catches and tries to run away with it so he can chew on it in his hiding place!
