Post 976: “…and your enemies closer….”

You’ve heard the axiom before: “Keep your friends close, but keep your enemies closer.” Andy apparently has, too.

Around the time I give Andy his daily dose of medicine, we become enemy combatants, Andy in his  armed camp, and me in mine. I intend to give him his medicine and a little loving, and he intends not to play my game.

Andy, pretending to be cool, but watching me closely for signs I'm about to get up to snatch him away to give him his medicine...!

Andy, pretending to be cool, but watching me closely for signs I’m about to get up to snatch him away to give him his medicine…!

Andy's suspicious now. He's spotted a slight change in my body position that he suspects is the next step before he gets snatched up and given medicine! (He guessed correctly, but I caught the little rascal anyway.)

Andy's "medicine face"....

Andy’s “medicine face”….

Oh the high drama! The pitiful protests! The struggle to avoid the inevitable and necessary dose of medicine! No, Andy, I am not pulling your tail off. I’m giving you something to help your blood pressure. (Yes, cats can have high blood pressure! And you thought they lived the life of Riley, no stress in their pampered little homes!)

  1. haha…love the drama. It’s no different here. Shoko has never had a problem so she is easy to give something to…she jumps backward when I’m finished with an expression like….”What did you do? I know you did something…what was it?” Kali is a different kettle of fish. I should never have given her that wrist watch. She knows the time the pill is coming and vacates the area. When I find her….she shakes her head so I can’t get it in her mouth or the easy one……take the pill and when I step away……spit it out and run. Meanwhile I’m left with a speck of a pill with spit all over it.

    • Andy’s medicine is a pill but they grind it up and mix it with tuna flavored distilled water. I don’t think Andy would be a good candidate for a tablet or capsule, so I hope he never needs medicine that can’t be delivered in liquid form.

      • My vet tries to get liquid forms for me because of the RA in my hands. I find if I can surprise her, I’m home free but that doesn’t happen very often. It would be impossible with Andy and these guys are pretty sharp when it comes to something unpleasant.

        • Yes, saame with Andy! I’ve found there are certain places he thinks are safe but are perfect for me to pluck him up, no resistance. I try to wait till he is in one of those spots to catch him.

    • I cringe to think about brushing Andy and Dougy’s teeth. So far, they haven’t had issues with teeth other than Andy having to have an incisor extracted because it was rubbing against a canine tooth, threatening to cause future problems. Unless you know how many teeth a cat should have,m you can’t tell he’s missing that one tooth.

  2. i think you need something for your blood pressure when you get done catching Andy and giving him his meds.
I am following you from face book now and get you posts from there.
Ali is having some really god days and is weaned way down on her meds and w have decided to keep her on a low dose of the atomic. This may help keep her a little healthier without affecting her kidneys.
You and the boys have a good day.

    • I’m crossing fingers and toes for dear Ali! I’ve talked with Andy and Dougy’s veterinarian about various things over the years, and one thing I asked him was what happens if I occasionally can’t catch the little rascal to give him the medicine. He told me it wasn’t tragic if I missed a day, though not to let it happen too often or in a row. Knowing I can skip the medicine if Andy is particularlytcagy some days takes the pressure off me. No stress, the cat’s easy to catch. Stressed out, the cat runs and runs and runs!

  3. What a face 🙂 They hate medicine… It is really big job to give a medicine to them… Bravo for you dear Weggie… But I am sure, lovely Andy makes a plan for next time 🙂 Thank you, love, nia
