    • I have to agree. This time of year, too, you sometimes get wonderful surprises. I, for example, am the first Nebraskan ever (or since) to spot a phainopepla at my backyard feeders. That was an astonishing quarter century ago. Nebraska records go back to Lewis and Clark. It is an acknowledged record with the Nebraska Ornithologists’ Union Records Committee, the official masters of the list of accepted bird records. I’ve had a few other less interesting if rare birds pop up, too: Golden-crowned sparrow and Varied thrush are two species of West Coast birds that managed to make it to Western Nebraska for me to spot. The amazing part is they all showed up at ordinary bird feeders in my backyard, something some hardcore birders found pissy since they thought these rare birds should only expose themselves to professionals and serious tickers. Or some such….!
