Post 1084: Sunday started out slowly…

I wondered if there’d be anything but sleeping kitties for today’s post. Then Andy woke up from his carrier top perch. When I sit in the recliner, this is his favorite sleeping post.

Sleepy Boy Andy finally sits up and checks things out.

Dougy stops by in the doorway. Does Andy want to play "The Game"? The wand toy they use to initiate "The Game" is there...!

Now on the walker, Andy touches the ottoman. Dougy will be upset if he sees it, and Andy knows it!

Andy escapes retribution for the ottoman faux pas, and Dougy hops up on the recliner arm for some serious scritching!

Dougy lets Andy know what it feels like when your brother messes with your favorite spot! Just sitting on Andy's shelf is as bad an affront as, well, Andy touching Dougy's ottoman!

The challenges both passed without incident. I guess this is a day for the boys to tolerate each other’s naughty behavior. Believe me, they do know when the other is being a bad kitty!

Andy and Dougy had the day at the groomer’s two days ago. You might notice they are neatly trimmed now. Maybe not so obvious is how one side of Dougy’s whiskers got cut, probably when he turned his head at the wrong time! They’ll grow back, but he looks a bit odd face on just now.

      • “Grooming, trimming or cutting off a cat’s whiskers is a big no-no. Without their tactile hairs, cats become very disoriented and frightened. In short, whiskers enable cats to gauge and make sense of their environment.”
They communicate with their whiskers as well – so some of the standoffs might be because Andy cannot read Dougy’s intentions without Dougy displaying them.

“Whiskers do grow back, but cats need their whiskers to remain intact in the same way you and I need our touch senses to get around. That is, cats use their whiskers in the same way that we use the touch receptors in our finger tips to feel our way around in the darkness, and to alert us to potentially painful situations.
Cat whiskers shed and grow back naturally, and should be left alone.”

      • His whiskers aren’t cut all the way off, just about half way. He hasn’t shown any problem getting around or relating to Andy. Of course, Dougy is my goofy, happy cat. Not much gets under his skin. He isn’t bumping into things or having problems eating, for potential problems lack of whiskers might cause. As for communicating, he gets his point across to Andy and me, no problem. That all said, I’m not happy that they got cut short.

      • Well, if it does not bugger him, then don’t worry, they will grow back – and you can use the information I gave you to make sure the groomers are a little more cautious.
I once got drilled in my tongue at the dentist. I was about 4 years old and the dentist told me off for moving my tongue (which I did, I’m sure) – but I never went to a dentist again until I was 8 or 9. A little less than ideal. Groomers, like that effing dentist, should be aware that their clients’ pets/child patients move irrationally – and that it’s their responsibility, not the client’s, to make sure no damage occurs.

  1. MOL We know this type of trick. We usually play the, “I got your spot” game during the winter when we can’t get out but you guys are in all the time. and after seeing the sam furry face day after day, one has to relieve their frustrations. This game is the perfect way to feel better and zing it to your bro.

      • haha…do they sleep with you at night? There is nothing like the 3am fight on the bed! Shoko never says peep during these fights but Kali screams like she’s being murdered. What a way to wake up! My heart’s pounding like crazy….then I look, through bleary eyes to the bottom of the bed. There’s Shoko hanging over Kali and Kali is just carrying on like Shoko has beaten the skin off her. Really!! Cats!! MOL

      • Andy likes to sleep close to me on the nightstand, but Dougy gets in bed with me. His favorite way to snooze with me is to get between my body and my arm. The wraps his paws around my arm, something he’s done since he was a kitten!

      • haha…right you told us before. Dougy and Kali must be kin because she gets right up close and purrs. Unlike Dougy she doesn’t do this too often. It would be nice but hey, there’s kibble in the kitchen and what all else she does at night. Both of them disappear during the night and reappear near morning. For all I know they’re having a party. hehe

  2. They look great, I did not notice the cut whiskers. That recently happened to my Snowball and I am not bringing her back to that place ( they also seemed to cut her in one spot).

    • The groomer I use is the only one in town. Though I wasn’t pleased about the whisker trim because of the importance they have to kitties, I also know kitties don’t always stay still when being groomed. Dougy really gets into it when I brush him, and I know he wiggles and prances back and forth to “help” direct where I brush him.

    • I can waddle short distances without cane or walker. I use a cane for short distances and a walker for long distances where I might need to stop to rest. I’ve used a cane since 2004. The walker is something I got in February back in Denver when I was barely out of the wheelchair stage of my recovery. Though I am much stronger now, I still am more secure using the walker. Besides, the kitty boys like to take a ride on it when I use it!
