18Jul20: Andy worries me some days…

I’m not sure what to think. Is Andy resting or is he planning? See the exposed murder claw in the bottom right photo? It seems “ready”. That expression on his puss, too….

Then there’s this business. What is he trying to tell me? Leave me alone? Nothing? It’s just weird!

=(^+^)=

What I didn’t know at the time I took the bottom photo is Dougy was already dead but Andy was watching for him to come around the corner like he always did. He’s still doing it. Sad since I’m not Dr. Dolittle or I’d talk with him about his companion and brother.

  1. I love his expressions. I agree. It takes time for humans and animals to embrace change and grief. It sounds like you two will adjust, though. Let some bugs in for distraction.

    • Thanks. I hope people realize Andy band I are loners by nature, so may come out of this doing something different than they want. In the end, it may make more sense not to add another kitty to the home.mIt still is out there, a decision not made.

        • I totally agree. One needs to make a major commitment to provide care for a pet’s lifetime, and that includes medical care in old age, which can be a major expense. I probably shouldn’t have accepted Andy, then Dougy so soon after the death of Louie the ginger cat, but I fell under the spell of them being cute kittens. I don’t regret doing this nine years ago, but falling for a kitten at this stage of my life would be more than I am physically up to.

  2. My guess is that Andy probably already knew Dougy had passed on. Their sense of smell is quite keen, and those two were very close as well. From what I have seen of the cats here over the years, it is better when they can see their companion has passed on. The other cat’s state is then a “known”, and they are not one of the “disappeared”, which I think fuels more anxiety. Cats achieve closure in their own way, on their own terms. Andy will probably continue his vigil for Dougy for a while. My own eyes are tearing up as I sense a hole where a once vibrant little cat being has gone off to join the Greater Universe. They are not on the front lines of life with us anymore, but I do think they are never far away. Just out of sight, but never far from heart and mind. Bless you and the little ones, Doug, from all of us here. 💙🌈🐾

    • As usual, you have the perfect insight into important matters! I feel the same about Andy and the benefit of having seen his brother before i took him to the veterinarian’s for a post mortem and cremation. Dougy was a talker. “The quiet that can’t be filled”, I guess, would be a good way to characterize his absence, i still have my moments, too. I usually cry if I try to talk about Dougy when someone says something to me about the loss. Of course, fewer people are left to say anything to me. Normality is returning slowly. Andy is becoming a fan of Nebraska Public Radio, which i turn on when I go to dialysis so he has some noise to replace his brother’s talking to him. At this point, he will soon be more informed than the average Nebraskan, plus have greater knowledge of classical music. Ha! We are doing well, in short. Sad but well into the healing.

    • Andy’s following that pattern, Greg. Fortunately, it seems to have made him more likely to want to be with me. I was Dougy’s human by his choice, making Andy a bit wary of intruding on Dougy’s claim. I like this change since Andy and I can be a comfort to eacg9iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii5555555555555555555555555555555555555555555555555555555555555555555555555555555555555555555555555555555555555555555550222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111c
each other. That’s Andy’s message to you. He’s been visiting me and walking all over my keyboard till I “scritch” and pet him enough for the moment. That’s new. Other than the interruption, it is nice to have him stop by and be comfortable about it.

  3. That second picture makes Andy look like an aloof and distinguished scholar who is so much more intelligent than any human! I know you both are having a tough time, but you have each other and your blogging buddies.

    • Yes, and that connection has been incredibly helpful these past few days. Andy and I are doing pretty well, all things considered.

    • I think so, too. When I hadn’t seen Dougy for a time and looked for him, Andy followed me. He was with me when I found Dougy’s body on the sofa in the guest bedroom, and he hopped up on the sofa, sniffed Dougy and waited there till I found something to carry Dougy’s body to the veterinarian for a post mortem and cremation.
