14Dec22: snow day…

Andy waited outside my bedroom. Blizzardy outside, I decided to keep warm under the covers and went back to bed.

When I got up (finally!) I gave Andy the anticipated and much welcomed “scritch”!

“Wanna see how much snow we got while I coccooned in my bed, Andrew?” Deep enough to drift a little in front of my door.

Not much out this way. Whew!

Andy licked snow that got inside the door.

Yep! The yard frog’s still smiling across the lane!

This post was put together on 13 December, roughly midday. Just when and if the big bad blizzard will strike where I live is a big question. Here’s what the official word is on that at midday yesterday:

 BREAKING WEATHER:  AIRPORT DELAYS

For the international readers, CST stands for the Central Time Zone. I find it odd that this email comes timed to CST since the National Weather Service – Cheyenne is in Cheyenne, Wyoming, which is in the Mountain Standard Time zone, one time zone west of Central Standard Time.

    • It was sufficient to close roads, schools, many businesses, even certain functions of the local hospital. The local landfill was closed and some roads in town, though the road crews did a fast job of opening and reopening roads.

  1. The time zone changes are crazy! Each time I travel to Michigan, I lose three hours which seems ridiculous. I’m glad that you haven’t got too much snow yet based on what little I can see outside your door. Stay warm, guys!

  2. We are getting the storm tomorrow (Thursday). Forecasters are all over the place because another storm is coming up the coast with rain. They will mix. We will get either snow, a snowy mix, or rain. Not sure what yet. It will be our first storm for the winter.

    • Thanks! So far there was a power outage but not much else. The roads are largely unpassable for the region, though people till try to drive them anyway. That endangers both them and the first responders who have to pull these people out of ditches or collisions with stopped vehicles.

    • Exactly! Once, it took me over an hour in a blizzard to get home from work. Five minutes was the usual commute time! People who came in for the next shift – work wasn’t called off! – ended up having to spend the next night and day at the plant. The food machines were empty by the end of it.

      • There was one record blizzard in Minnesota where it took me three hours to get home from work. Later I saw comments online from people who said they were in agony over their need to use the bathroom while creeping along in traffic. I remember thinking at the time, “I really could use a cup of coffee while sitting here!” But in retrospect I am glad I didn’t have any before hitting the road that evening. I probably would have just grabbed a newspaper or old towel to protect the car seat, and let nature take its course!

        • One does what one has to do! I keep blizzard supplies in my car though my longest commute now makes being trapped in a blizzard very unlikely.
