I worked on mats between Andy’s legs last night. He was not a happy kitty! My arms and hands took a few hits, but any kitty person knows lots of blood pours in one’s relationship with these little darlings! It was worth all the bleeding to eliminate mats from between his front legs.

Next: those mats on his butt that resist brushing out.

I hope Andy feels better with the mats gone.

I try not to pull the wrong way and cause him hurt or discomfort, but the bleeding suggests I need to improve my methods!

  1. We had a semi-long-haired cat who got tangled mats on his underparts. I used to clip them out slowly. I’d use a pair of blunt-nosed elementary school scissors. When I saw him reclining I’d trim some of the outer hairs around the mat, leaving those in the center that were matted really close to the skin. In a few days or a week, the fur would have grown more and the matted area wouldn’t be as close to the skin. So I’d trim a few more outer furs off, maybe leave it again until it had grown out far enough away from the skin to clip the remaining matted area next to the skin with no risk. Wouldn’t be long before it all grew out more and looked pretty again. Maybe not for everyone but worked for us.
