23Jul24: I guess Andy isn’t into  noir…

Andy stopped by to watch a little television with me.

All right! “Noir Alley” time! This one has Raft and Mayo and Morgan and Burr! It ought to be pretty good.

Andy didn’t last long. Maybe it’s because of the religious theme × murder mystery combo. It is a bit of a stretch.
Speaking of stretch…Andy’s stretched out and slumbering through the movie.
He woke up and decided the movie still is a bit much of a stretch, but kitty treats are forever!

=(^+^)=

That movie was…um…pretty goofy, though Raymond Burr’s character turns out to be the bad guy, of course.

In the process of running from the George Raft character, with lots of bullets zinging everywhere till Burr empties his gun, Burr tries to evade capture by climbing onto an electric sign advertising Raft’s character’s trucking firm. It is raining cats and dogs and it is night because it is a noir film after all!

The finale is obvious, yet it turns out Burr’s character steps into an electrifried puddle, is electrocuted, and Raft pontificates about the Bible verse having to do with vengeance being Gxd’s business, not his. Of course, the whole film was about Raft trying to track down his brother the priest’s killer before the police could so he could kill the son of a female dog first!

I think Andy had the right idea on this film.

  1. Was this the movie “Red Light?” The one where the plot partly centered around a stolen Gideon Bible? I saw it centuries ago (well it feels like it) at some noir film festival at an old art deco theater. I bought a festival ticket for $20, which seemed outrageous at the time, particularly since a lot of the movies were on unrestored film and had a number of pops and glitches: but now that I’m older, I appreciate the artsy nuances in those movies and wished I had been more patient and watchful as a 20-something. That movie was a little strange, though, especially the relationship between the “hero” and the female lead. I don’t think male directors knew what to do with the strong women in noir films.

    • Yes, that’s the film! In agree about male directors and strong female characters. Then you have Ida Lupino as strong female character and director, whose films were super!

    • J’ai dû chercher Pacha. Le mieux que j’ai pu comprendre, c’est qu’Andy est un chat du monde ! Vous avez peut-être raison !

  2. It makes purrfect sense that a black kitty would have extra insight into noir. I love the atmosphere in those movies, but I guess they can’t all be good.

    • I think most of them were meant to be the second or B movie in double features. They can be very good or plain stinkers. As a former US Army motion picture photographer, I get a kick out of how shots are staged and how that affects or supports the story.
