25Mar24: birthdays only come once a year…

Before Andy waited impatiently for me to come home, then made me play an exceptionally long “Mousies in Cabinet” game, there was my birthday with the Class of 1966 pals.

Tootsie isn’t upset when I greet her with “Meow-meow!”, then correct myself with a “Woof-woof!” Hey! She smells Andy on me and correctly identifies me as  cat person.

A chorus of “Happy Birthday” and a card are de rigueur, of course.

And friends from ancient times and before, of course, are absolutely part of the fête!

Beer and pizza – yum! – seem acceptable for old bodies on special diets because “I had a big salad with it, doctor!” (…and two more slices of pizza so I could finish my Blue Moon, but don’t tell my doctor! Cheese and tomato sauce. Pepperoni in excess. That’s three forbidden items, which makes them taste especially good.)

We go for ice cream “cake” in our group, which is fine with me because I don’t eat birthday cake someone’s blown out candles over. Unsanitary! The ice cream “cake” was a refreshing end to the meal. Then we finished the day with lots of talk about topics of the day and news about friends.

    • Tootsie was saved from a kennel when Donna learned someone she knew couldn’t have pets in their new home. She knew Tootsie and told her friends she’d take her, that there was no way she could allow her to end up in a kennel, with all that could entail. Tootsie won the grand prize in the lotto of life! Donna is a good doggy mom!

Andy made sure we had quality time and my friends did, too!

  1. I guarantee pizza, beer, and an ice cream cake (from DQ, of course) are an excellent combination. Even adding a salad is ok, though I ate mine without and fatty dressing, plain. That was refreshing for a change.

  2. I laughed when I saw another germophobe! There are no candles on birthday cakes here and an ice cream cake is wonderful! Pizza and beer is one of my favs too. Happy birthday! You may have to work harder to clean out your system but it was worth it!

    • Monthly blood analyses tell on my transgressions, but usually I come in high on the things I need to watch out for. “Oh yeah! I hit the dairy a lot just before the blood was taken but was a good boy the rest of the month….!” LOL!

I need to be aware of sanitary practices because of my health issues, but even before I had health issues, birthday cake was problematic.

    • I didn’t, mainly because I was full when I took the two extra pieces. I barely finished them, but the challenge was met!

  3. Birthdays are indeed just once a year, and who knows how many more one gets to enjoy? I try to eat healthy between celebrations, but when my big day comes, I go all out. Pizza and beer are an excellent birthday feast, and that cake is worth every calorie and cholesterol count! (And now you’ve given me ideas for how I want to observe my birthday….) Many happy returns of the day, Doug! And I hope Andy had fun as well!

  4. Cute picture of Andy, and Tootsie is cute too! Sounds like you had a blast on your birthday! That’s a pretty cake, and this is probably bad advice, but when it comes to the tasty treats, I say, go for it!

    • I agree on the tasty treats. Hangaku Gozen’s comment about the number of remaining birthdays, etc. is relevant: have a treat for your birthday, then be good the rest of the time!
