I help Andy with mats by brushing the little ones out and pulling the big ones apart. Of course, he doesn’t always appreciate the help.

Andy and I miss Dougy
Monkey has quite a few and I bought some Demat stuff. I also cut them, if possible.
“Demat stuff”! You caught my attention! Tell me what you use, please. I pull Andy’s apart mostly, but if there is something that might help ease the tangle, Andy and I would be happy to try it!
Andy’s mats look easier to work with so this might help.
It’s called Fab Fur Kitty cat detangeling spray. I got it from Chewy but it might be on Amazon.
Andy is hard at work on that hair mat. That is quite a job for both of you!! I am lucky Wynken’s long fur is not the type that mats readily.
We both ate working on them, and I think we are down to a couple by his butt!
Does this mean that Mr Andy is not getting his haircuts and spa treatments anymore?
No, his groomer had to quit because of health issues, and one who was coming from a nearby village rolled he mobile grooming van and pickup, ending that to-your-door service. My mobility issues and time issues because of dialysis make letting Andy go natural a reasonable thing to do for now. It does mean I have to pick up on grooming responsibilities and increased housekeeping chores because of the longer hair.
That’s a shame; it’s making your life more challenging.
I hope he gets all of the mats out, bummer!
It’s a constant job because they form all the time. I do believe Andy would form fewer if he’d let me brush him regularly. I’m working in that by regularly brushing him a little when he isn’t expecting it. The sensation will be more agreeable if the coat isn’t tangled and the hair isn’t being pulled!

I mostly cut out the mats cause PCB can get really bitchy.
That would be my choice. Those seam ripping tools sewers use work nicely on tough ones that don’t want to pull apart, but I prefer not to use one because there’s a possibility if accidentally stabbing the little darling!
I have a lot of HarborFreight 99cent scissors and they are surprisingly sharp. I have to be careful because I once cut a cat and still have horrible quilt about it.

Mats are a nuisance, for sure!
They come out of Andy’s coat easily enough if he’s in the mood to let me work them out. I’ve become pretty proficient at it!
Louis Catorze is also not the most amenable when it comes to helping him remove mats. Yet if we left it all up to him, he’d be covered in them!
They have to be dealt with. I remember this friendly long haired cat I met at a friend’s once that had a coat full of mats from long neglect, thinking the owners should take better care of their pet. I don’t ever want to be that pet person!
