I know part of the concern about Andy sleeping so often in photos is that he is 13 years old, and that could indicate he is approaching death.
Another death indicator is the cat no longer is able to self-groom or has started to stop grooming. See photos! I can’t believe how supple he is for a cat at any cat age!
A further indicator is failure to eat. Andy’s veterinarian follow-ups reveal he’s putting on weight, thanks to a positive response to his hyperthyroidism medication.
Yes, he will die someday, I will moutn and miss the wee rascal, but he is thriving now.
I hope this allays any concerns.

Cats can live into their 20s, even with health issues, but like all of us, there is no way of knowing for sure. Enjoy the time while he is here.
I see on the reader feed that Greg In Washington (Feline Cafe) has lost another dear kitty. Zeke passed on, just about 3 months after Scooby. Just Opie left now.
All cats sleep a lot. I have cats ranging in age from 3-14 and they all sleep several hours a day. 🙂
Foo ! The sleeping is the least indicator of his slowing down. In fact, he may be a bit short in that category !
I am very happy to hear that Mr Andy is in good shape for his age. I have similar concerns about Beba and Barmalei who are almost 15. A visit to a vet or, alternatively, a visit of the mobile vet is due.

My Tara is 13 and she is still healthy. You’re right,some cats can live into their 20’s and I think it’s normal for cats to sleep a lot. Sometimes, I feel like a cat.

He looks healthy to me and most of my cats lived to 16 or more so he has a way to go. Just like people, you can (mostly) tell a sick cat by lack of appetite, weight loss, coat dullness and inability to maintain cleanliness. I’m not worried about Andy. Sometimes surprises happen (like Doug’s sudden demise) but that’s rare. Since I have multiple cats, I can also tell by the reaction from the other cats. When Gracie got sick, they deferred to her and kept trying to smell her as if they could diagnose based on smell. They knew. She did too. I was the one that was slow to pick up on it.
Yes, there are those signs of sliding down that can prepare one for the death of a pet, but Andy does show them. I have the benefit of living with him and knowing he is as active and involved in hus favorite activities as he’s ever been. I hope he does have a long and healthy life, something I can contribute to.

Very active and involved grooming by Andy. Eating well and keeping a healthy weight is a good sign too. Snoozing’s popular with our youngish kitties, too. Cute pictures!
I am happy with Andy’s health and the veterinarian care I am able to get for him. Some comments have suggested to me that Andy might be in decline. I hope my current and last post help answer why so many photos are of a sleeping kitty, one of the three or so big indicators of mammalian death, including yours and mine.

Nia, I am around Andy most of the day, and I am aware of his activity level. There have been comments that made me think readers were concerned Andy might be in decline, close to life’s end. I don’t know how much longer I’ll have him, of course, but I know cats that live inside all their lives and have regular veterinary care, like Andy, can live till their 20s. I hope Andy has a long, healthy life, of course, unlike his late brother Dougy. I hope I outlive Andy so I will always be around to assure that he has those things he needs to have that good life.
