I am always curious as to the origins of superstitions, as part of folklore.

That’s something I find interesting, too. Some are obvious – walking under a ladder might knock a can of paint off the fold down shelf or something. The black cat superstition relates to witchcraft and a witch’s second. Of course, Wiccans exist still, but I suspect I’d be in deep water if black cats were dangerous! On the other hand, they are good luck in some cultures.

My husband claims that Barmalei (my black cat) is my familiar. Not that I am a witch, G-d forbid, but there is a definite connection, more than I’ve ever had with any other cat. Perhaps people who observed this kind of a connection between people and cats in the past formed a superstition.
Wishing good health when someone sneezes comes form the fact that, unfortunately, in the past, sneezing often meant deadly influenza, known today as common flu. I find tracing those customs fascinating.

My friend Deborah is hosting our mutual friend from Amsterdam till our friend comes to Alliance for a week with me. One of the places they visited this week was the Salem, Massachusetts memorial to those women (mostly) executed for being “witches”. Intolerance through the ages seems to be part of the human experience.

My older son lives a few minutes away from Salem, so I’ve been there many times (my favorite place to go “antiquing”) and I am familiar with the museum and the memorial. Intolerance to unknown and thus mysterious phenomena, born of fear, is part of human psyche. It is instinctive, mostly, but of course, buffered by various religions.

My Maine friend picked our Nederlander friend up at Boston, and the Salem visit coincides with a stop by to her son, who lives there.

My son lives in Swampscott, and we’ll be visiting in October. I am looking forward to spending time in Salem all decked out for Halloween.

That would be very interesting, I’m sure! I wouldn’t mind spending time there at that time of year myself.

For 20 years, we went there in August and only got pictures of my granddaughter dressed up in the midst of Salem Halloween festivities. I am looking forward to this visit!

What ? Dougy is no more polite with his “father”?
Do you want a cracker Dougy ? 🙂
In friendship

LOL! He always sleeps there. I think it is because he can count on me going in that room and he’ll wake up when I do. Then he can direct me toward the kitty food….
Well, I do get in their ways, GP! My role, of course, if to give them food, play with them, and to leave them alone when they don’t want anything to do with me!
It’s a slow-paced one! Dougy manages to stand up and block the way for a few steps, barely walking away from me and in front of me, a true tripping hazard! I look forward to the times I can actually just step over him!
He is doing what our Lucio does, sleeping in the middle of the entrance to the kitchen area. 🙂
They have their way of letting us know we are watched!
He’s domination the house
How true! Andy is less pushy, but he lets me know when he wants special attention, too!
It happens, with our lovely cats ! 🙂
Both of them do it, but Dougy is the worst one!
Like your site and I followed you
Thank you! I followed yours, too!
Thanks weggieboy
Don’t worry Dougy, I am sure your Dad wouldn’t want you to be inconvenienced 🙂
Never, nope, nevaaaaiiirrrrrr! LOL!
The more cats you live with, the more training you get towards becoming an Olympics hurdler!
So true! So true!
According to an old superstitions, if you step over kids or pets, they won’t grow. For what it’s worth.
Both kitty boys are full grown despite bad habits for where they plop down….
I am full of old superstitions in which I, myself, do not believe, but my grandmother’s voice rings in my ears. 😻
While things people believed are interesting, I am not a superstitious person.

Ths cat owns a strategic mind ! 🙂
You are correct about that, Michel! You can’t ignore a cat that wants your attention!
Yes cats may be tenacious . 🙂
LOL!
Dougy, that’s bad behavior. Don’t be blocking people for no reason.
I agree! I think this is a cool spot because of the floor covering and it is a spot where he can pay close attention to where I am.
Nothing like taking a regal position there, eh?
You got that right, GP. When I approach, he stands up and walks (slowly!) in front of me, a nuisance!
I think he’s showing you what a pain in the arse you are to move him! haha

You got it!! They taught you well. 🙂
“Whatever you say, kitty. I am your slave forever….”
He’s thinking he calls the shots again !
Unfortunately for me, he is!
Oh dear !
are you ready for an obstacle race ? ready set go!
