Po\st 939: pretty active for a Caturday…!

Most of the day, it was “Snooze City”. Mid-afternoon, however, Dougy in particular got a dose of adrenaline.

"What to do? What to do?" Dougy wanders over to his personal mess to see what he can do.

[Note: Yes, this is Dougy! You can see the boys’ Birman father’s markings in the shot above. Especially when the boys’ hair is short, this pattern is obvious in certain lights. In other lights, they still look black.]

Andy can't believe his brother is so active this afternoon.

      • It’s nice if you have two that get along together. Andy and Dougy have a sister and brother who went to the same home in South Dakota, and reportedly hate each other’s guts.

Andy and Dougy, on the other hand, get along great 99% of the time, and never stay mad at each other when they do have tiffs over territory.

My neighbor in another neighborhood had a calico and a tom that were sister-brother. The brother was mean as hell to his sister, and his sister was a nervous wreck. After the brother died, she became a very sweet kitty, a joy to pet and be around.

You just can’t predict these things. It is nice to have two if they get along!.

      • Whatever you do, best of wishes! I know your current kitty is a joy, and a second kitty, if the right one, will give your kitty a nice play partner of the right species or the worst enemy from hell. It’s risky business!

      • That was my thought on getting a second cat back when. Of course, I was planning on letting Andy grow a bit and get better first before finding a little pal for him, so getting Dougy (in a similar state of ill health) so soon after I got Andy wasn’t planned. Fortunately, I was able to afford to leave them at the veterinarian’s for as long as it took to get them stabilized.

      • You should get a cat from a shelter – they understand there that not all cats get along well. I was very, very lucky when my little one came. I have a very gentleman-like male and he missed his female, that died eight weeks before the not so little one came (she was 1 year and seven months) and the very first moment they encountered each other both I and the lady from the shelter expected to hear a hiss or a growling or some other exclamation of “my territory” from my tom. But he sat there, at his favourite spot under the bed when guests come, and the little one had joined him. Not directly next to him, but about a foot and a half apart … From that day on they are mostly sweet with each other.
Choose one by temper alone. Not by looks, not by age. If you cat is very active, do not choose a senior cat when that senior is rather quiet. If your cat is already hissing at each cat passing under the window, maybe she is not too eager to have a feline companion.

      • This is great advice! Thank you! Sonu Singh is pretty calm a cat, he doesn’t go outside, but he watches other cats come into our garden. He thinks he’s human to be honest!

  1. Those are beautiful pictures. I do so wish I could get Maggie a brother or sister; however, she has been unfriendly at “sniff n’ greets” so I haven’t wanted to chance it. If she’s happy being an “only”, great. But I do think it would help her stress level to have a playmate.
