Post 839: long goodbyes…

We all have them, friends we adore and enjoy so much we can’t imagine not having them regularly a part of our lives. Often, though, those friends disappear until you come across an old photo to remind you that you once adored them and enjoyed their company.

We broke bread together in Paris. We were young and full of ourselves. We loved our lives and lived them fully.

I would have guessed most of us in this photo were fated to be friends for life.

Cathy. Deborah’s sister, I met only in Paris during this visit and had no more contact with her.

Deborah I saw a time or two later in France and Kaiserslautern, then briefly in 2001 when she visited Nebraska to see Ralph and his father. She was moving from the West Coast with her three cats in tow. I met her cats and we discussed their personalities for a few minutes while Ralph and his father waited in the car. (Ralph is allergic and has the misfortune to chose friends who harbor cats in their hearts and homes…!)

Deborah borrowed my camera to take some souvenir photos of Hunawihr. When I got the film processed after I returned to Kaiserslautern, this charming photo was among those she'd taken!

Tim disappeared from the radar, but turned up in Charlotte, North Carolina. He called me once. We talked for a long time, made vague promises to keep in touch, then didn’t. Well, I guess I did contact him by phone one more time several years later when, on a whim, I typed his name in google and found out he’d become a successful architectural photographer. Check out his link. Tim’s very talented.

Don't pass into the portal because...

Don’t pass into the portal because…

...you will disappear!

…you will disappear!

Tim is in these photos, two from a series where he runs into a tunnel under a railroad bed, then gradually disappears by the last frame. Curiously, this foretold the fate of our friendship.

Ralph, Debroah, and Cathy send Tim (hanging out of the window) and me off to Kaiserslautern after our Paris visit. We were very sad and the goodbyes long.

Ralph, Deborah, and Cathy send Tim (hanging out of the window) and me off to Kaiserslautern after our Paris visit. We were very sad and the goodbyes were long.

“Goodbye”, from “God be with you”. Au revoir and auf wiedersehen (literally “on seeing [you] again”). Some combination or all of those phrases passed among us till the locomotive pulled the train out of the station in Paris on its way to points east, including Tim and my “home base” at the time, Kaiserslautern, Germany.

We were young and full of ourselves. We loved our lives and lived them fully. When we assured each other we’d get together again some day, we drank the Kool-Aid of self-delusion: No, really! We would get together again! “See ya!”

The older I get, the more I understand long goodbyes.

Post 838: naughty kitty…

I returned a bit late from the museum yesterday. The boys were waiting…. And waiting…. And waiting….!

“We do not like to wait,” Dougy reminded me as he chewed on paper from an over-turned wastepaper basket. At least he wasn’t acting out in his usual way!

(I attach a photo from some time back that shows what Dougy likes to do to show he is mad at me.”

Dpigu beingh a very naughty kitty... and enjoying it!

Post 837: an unwelcome observer…

Dougy has one thing to say to SpongeBob…:

“Stop mocking me…!”

==== 🙁 ====

There is some confusion about this photo above. Dougy’s ears are circled in red and claw tips that look like little eyes are circled in yellow. Look closely and you can see it’s his front legs hanging over the edge in the photo, left paw over his right paw, which is the one that shows a little reflection of light off his claw tips.

Sorry for the confusion.

Post 836: kitty nap time…

Both boys take their daytime naps. Well, all three of us do, to be honest! Yet I never know where the cat brothers will chose to nap on any given day. They are as secretive as Saddam Hussein was, moving from “palace” to ‘palace” each nap time to avoid whatever inside kitties fear most, each other most likely since they are siblings and fight and play like brothers do!

I located Andy's secret lair today. It's an old one he's not used for some time.

Yes, once again Andy's nap times are in the clothes drier.

Post 835: Andy’s lazy day…

Andy enjoyed several naps today, as did Dougy. They are cats, right?! But, at one point Andy realized he had important cat business at the back window.

“I should do something productive today…!”

Andy guards the back window. You never know what naughty birds are going to do in the fir!

Post 834: Andy stages a coup…

Dougy had lots of fun playing in the boxes yesterday. Unfortunately got him, Andy saw him and decided he wanted fun, too!

Andy makes his plan. Dougy shall go!

Dougy shall go!

Silly Dougy! Doesn't he know better than to leave his boxe unguarded? Andy made his move and he's entrenched inside the prize!

Andy made his move and he’s entrenched inside the prize!

“Hee! Hee! All the fun is all mine all the time!” Andy chortles.
He peeps out the hole, waiting for the Neko wand toy to come his way. He tries to enlarge the hole by chewing the edges.

Dougy holds out hope of recovering his prized box.... Andy holds steady. It's his fort now! Mwahahahaha!

Dougy left the room and Andy has his day in the sun! That was easier than he thought.

Dougy surrenders and Andy has his day in the sun! That was easier than he thought.

No use whining about it Dougy! Andy took it fair and square. Sort of..o!

Post 833: playing in boxes comes naturally…on Caturday

It seems the boys pick up on my intentions. For example, I’d love to toss several boxes scattered through the apartment, but boxes the boys ignore for weeks suddenly become favorite play zones the moment I get the urge. Andy and Dougy are uncanny this way.

Such is the case of a couple of boxes in the front room. They look ratty and I’d love to toss them. Dougy chose this morning, however, to renew his interest in them as play zones. Of course!

Dougy taunts me. Yes, he decides he wants to play in this box.

Woohoo! Dougy's on secret cat business...!

Take my word for it: Anything that walks past this

Take my word for it: Anything that walks past this “window” will reap the tragic murder-claw of horrific death!

Next Dougy attacks whatever is under the flap (nothing...!), thoroughly ripping at the carpet. No wonder the pet deposit is nonrefundable!

Andy becomes excited on hearing the carpet scritching! Dougy better pay attention if he wants to keep the boxes to himself!

Yes, the last photo is foreshadowing. Tomorrow, we’ll see if Andy messes with Dougy’s fun. I can pretty much predict he will!

Post 832: in which I try to get Dougy to smile…

Dougy knows exactly what happens when I point a camera his way: a blinding flash of light goes off in his face! Consequently, getting a photo of Dougy with his eyes open is a rare and wonderful thing. Or I think it is. It rarely happens!

Dougy shows interest. Of course he's mostly inyerested in what I'm having for breakfast.

I try to get his attention for a surprise snap snot. Dougy's smarter than to fall for that trick again!

Eyes closed...yep! Another fine photo of Dougy, with his eyes closed!

As good as it's going to get today!

Post 831: watching is exhausting…

The back window overlooks a fir that always has lots of birds in it. Andy and Dougy really like this tree! They watch it every chance they get.

Andy on watch.

Andy on watch.

That isn't to say it isn't hard work for a kitty...!

Post 830: cat sense…

Computers generate heat. Cats seek heat. No wonder Andy loves to snooze on top of my PC!
